To tone up and lose weight, you will want to go with strength/endurance training. You will tone up like a mofo.

I would recommend a circuit workout. I do the Navy Seals basic training program and I can't complain about the results! It involves a lot of running, pushups, pullups, situps, swimming (if you have access). Over time it gets more difficult, so you just keep pushing yourself past your limits and it's awesome.

That would be a bad idea. You would be over-training yourself that way.

When you over-train your body, burning fat will not be enough to fuel your body (not enough energy). Your body will turn on your muscles for fuel, which is bad on many levels.

Muscles only need to be trained 1-2 a week, MAX. It takes muscles a long time to recover and get ready to workout again.

3 days a week is perfect. You can't go wrong with that :P

Cheers ^^

Quick answer here. No, it will not be good for you to train twice a day. Rule of thumb here, your fitness goals are not reached in the gym, they are reached after you leave the gym and eat a good food plan and rest your muscles. When you do any type of resistance training, you are actually breaking down muscle tissue. You need to give those muscles time to repair themselves. This time varied for many, from one day to one week. Regardless, it's good to get in your one workout for the day and then wait for at least 24 hours before working out again. It's no different that getting a cut on your hand. If you cut your hand, then one day later you cut in same spot, and do that everyday, the cut will never heal. If you cover the cut, don't hit it, etc, it'll heal.

One other thing I'll say. There are serious workout fanatics in absolutely incredible shape. Pro athletes, bodybuilders, etc. Even most of them do not work out twice a day. If they don't need it, why would the average gym goer?

Resistance bands have the unique ability to provide resistance throughout the entire movement. When you use free weights, you don't necessarily get that continuous resistance. For example, during the lifting phase of a bicep curl, gravity works to provide your bicep with resistance, along with the weight. During the lowering portion of the movement, you lose some of that tension and often simply drop the weight. With bands, you can concentrate on both the lifting and lowering phase of each exercise. The result is that your muscles are challenged in a completely different way, which can help you avoid boredom and, more importantly, weight loss plateaus.

the more weight the better for strength, unless it hurts, you should use a weight you are comfortable with but you should still have to use a good bit of effort to make 15-20 reps

In a word, yes, weight training will help you reduce your body fat, which is ultimately what I imagine you are referring to as opposed to weight. While it is true that you burn some good calories while your running and doing cardio, and even during a strength training routine. The added benefit you get from strength training is it builds muscle, the more muscle you have the more calories you burn while at rest as it increases your metabolic rate. The average 150lb woman burns somewhere on the order of 1650 calories per day just surviving, compare that with the approximately 200 you burn for 30 minutes on the treadmill. If you can alter your muscle mass you can increase that 1650 upwards of 2000, that is much more affective and requires less effort then the extra hour you would need to run on the treadmill to make that up.

Absolutely add strength training. Did you know that building muscle (don't worry, you won't bulk up) is the fastest way to lose fat? It's because muscle burns all that stored fat and the pounds melt off. Just keep that new muscle fed with some protein from lean meat and supplement with protein shakes.

I suggest getting a set of adjustable Bodylastics resistance bands. You really don't need anything else. Bodylastics also has some great: free workouts. Check out the shows. Signup is free. There is never a fee to do the workouts. It's like having your own personal trainer.

Actually, the fastest way to lose weight IS to build muscle. Each pound of muscle burns 40-50 calories per day, so the more you have, the more fat you burn. To keep the muscle from catabolising itself, it's also important to get enough protein.

For effective fat loss and muscle building right at home, get a set of Bodylastics resistance bands. I suggest the Super Strong Man system. If you have a workout partnet, then get the larger Family Mega pack with 388 pounds of resistance. It has enough tubes and accessories for both people to workout at the same time. Bodylastics has awesome workouts. Click here for their: free workouts. They've got new shows daily. For muscle building, you'll want to watch the show called Chiseled.

The more muscle you build, the faster the fat will melt off. But when the muscles run out of fuel, they'll use themselves for fuel and that's one of the reasons why it's important to get enough protein. It's a complex cycle. Dieting can result in muscle loss if you don't strength train.

Strength training also helps builds strong bones which is important to ward off osteoporosis. Here's a good explanation of it http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/strength-training/HQ01710

The only time that you need to be in a caloric surplus to add muscle is when you are at low fat percentages. However, you will need a surplus of NUTRIENTS (especially carbs and protein) to add muscle.

For example, someone who weighs 200 lbs and has 20% body fat will have a lean mass of 160 lbs and a resting metabolic rate of around 1950 calories per day.

If he eats 250 grams of carbs, 130 grams of protein, and 40 grams of fat per day, he will get adequate protein and carbohydrates while only consuming 1880 calories per day.

This will put him in a caloric deficit even when you do not factor in the calories that he will be burning from exercise. If he is lifting weights, he will be gaining muscle while slowly losing fat due to the caloric deficit.

Here is an article about muscle growth and a calorie estimator for gaining muscle while losing fat.

Also, the increased muscle from working out will burn more calories.
